How to set up the NFC chip in your keychain

Your keychain has a programmable NFC chip sealed inside. Save a link to it, and any phone that taps it opens that link. Setup takes about a minute with a free app.

Set it up in 4 steps

  1. Install a free NFC app. NFC Tools works on both iPhone and Android.
  2. Choose what to save. In the app, tap Write, then Add a record, then pick URL (best for most uses) or another type.
  3. Hold your phone to the keychain. On iPhone, use the top edge of the phone. On Android, use the middle of the back. Keep it still until the app confirms.
  4. Test it. Lock your phone, wake it, and tap the keychain. Your link should pop up.

You can rewrite the chip as often as you like. The apps also offer a Lock option, but locking is permanent, so only lock it if you never want to change it.

Ideas for what to put on it

Which phones work

iPhone XS and newer read NFC tags automatically while the screen is on, with no app. Writing to the chip needs an app such as NFC Tools. Most Android phones read and write tags once NFC is switched on in Settings.

How much it holds

The chip is an NTAG215 with 504 bytes of storage. A website link, social profile or Wi-Fi login fits easily. For lots of contact details, save a link to a contact page instead of a full contact card.

Is it safe?

Yes. The chip has no battery, no GPS and no way to track you. It only works when a phone is within about an inch, and it only shares the link you saved. If you ever want it blank, write an empty record over it.
